Stun, Stunning and Stunned
In a word, the second concert in Shandelee Music Festival’s 2017 “P.L.A.Y. the Classics” series on September 28 at Bethel Woods Center ‘wasn’t.’ What is was was P.L.A.Y. a tiny bit of the Classics, one Tango and lots of serious Jazz, fun Jazz, innovative Jazz and thrilling Jazz. And P.L.A.Y it fervently, feverishly, and stun the audience by making sure you don’t let up the momentum for a single second.
Those who witnessed Borislav ’s concert at Shandelee in August know what a great cellist he is, and how he also entertains over and above his stunning cello P.L.A.Y.ing. I had dubbed him as the Victor Borge of the cello because of the abundant humor he brings to a classical concert. But I was stunned at this concert, titled “Cabaret Night with Borislav and Friends.” Stunned by his unique concept and stunning delivery of what friends he chose, and what he/they chose to perform and how they performed it.
Normalcy began the proceedings. One person. One cello. Unaccompanied Bach. (I think a “Bouree from Suite # 3” – I had some difficulty hearing some announcements.) Next came two people, cello and piano, for Schubert’s “Ave Maria” BUT with a middle piano solo section with which I am not familiar. Needless to say, Strulev’s exquisite phrasing for the beautiful melody was in full evidence. Accompanying him was Matt Herskowitz, who then P.L.A.Y.ed a solo piano middle section that was new to me. I did not have a chance to ask anyone or check on Youtube if Herskowitz, who is also a composer, composed that middle section a la Schubert or if it was Schubert’s. Whoever composed it can thank Herskowitz for his superb P.L.A.Y.ing which complemented Strulev’s beautiful phrasing.
It was followed by an original work of Herskowitz’, composed for a theatrical production about Marc and Bella Chagall, a very deeply moving, almost “pop” in style opus, with a most interesting piano part. Then, together they P.L.A.Y.ed a version of Gershwin’s ‘classical’ “Prelude # 2”, and since I know that work only as a piano solo, I suspect they both created the stunning duet version we heard.
So from Bach, to Schubert to Herskowitz to Gershwin, where else to proceed but to jazz, performing an Oscar nominated Herskowitz work for a cartoon. And the fun began as they over-emphasized and entertained with Strulev’s fingers sliding up and down the cello, followed by what Strulev called “Bach a la Jazz”, and then Herskowitz’ “Chopin Boogie Woogie,” based on the “Waterfall” etude, with Herskowitz showing off his stunning jazz technique and fingers touching what could have been all 88 piano keys as fast as possible.
And then came the time for more friends to join the cabaret night as Yaacov Mayman brought his saxophone to the stage, the superb Alex Blake who brought his double bass, Alexandra Mogilevich who sat down by her drums and Victor Prieto who brought his accordion, continuing the “P.L.A.Y. the Jazz” concert.
Then came what stunned me, and I suspect all the audience, most. A jazz concert with one ‘musician’ never before heard in a jazz concert by any of us: tap dancer Yuka Kameda. Think that’s far out? Well, it didn’t stop there as on stage came beatboxer Rizumik, stunning the audience (and myself, as it was my first time hearing a beatboxer perform) with his remarkable vocal percussion technique, mimicking drum equipment complete with cymbals and wood blocks, etc., using his lips, tongue and voice.
How to describe in a word or two these eight performers P.L.A.Y.ing (and dancing) all together is not easy. So I will say it could be described as: a vaudeville, controlled mayhem, a wild party, the ultimate Gong Show, or even possibly musical insanity.
All together, they jazzed up “La Vie En Rose” with Strulev starting the proceedings by playing the melody and the others then taking their “jazz” turns with the song, another Gershwin prelude, then adding the tango “El Choclo” (“Kiss of Fire”) to the mix, then Strulev making sounds on the cello like birds flying, then jazzing up “Autumn Leaves” (with Mayman’s electric clarinet) and then, for their encore, starting with the theme from “Hava Nagila” stunningly morphing into “Caravan.”
It was a wild roller coaster ride. I am sure no one of us will ever forget.
