Was it a childhood dream boy — a musician in the third generation, from childhood accustomed to discipline and many hours of exercise on the cello, accompanied by his grandmother every day, and then his mother to attend music school, to make run with the Olympic flame? Hardly. But the famous cellist Borislav Strulev carried the torch of the Olympic torch through the streets of Belgorod on January 17, 2014. That was in the city, where Borislav will held his third BelgorodMusicFest – Borislav Strulev & Friends, which is part of the Cultural Olympiad in Sochi.
Musicians and athletes have much in common: to achieve a result, both of them need talent which must be accompanied by persistent and constant training. Without this nothing will come neither any sports arena nor concert hall. Besides that musicians and athletes perform in front of a large audience and they should be able to focus on the process, and at the same time they should give a report that all eyes of the viewers are directed to them at the moment. So how to become a world celebrity? Who helps young musicians and how to grow a good musician? Borislav Strulev answered these and other questions specifically for our newspaper.
— We created a large number of funds that supporting young musicians. But despite this, the problem of training young musicians isn’t resolved, it still exists. The absence of large international festivals that include master classes of world celebrities affects. When a brilliant pianist, student of Vladimir Viardo, Grammy—nominated pianist, composer, jazz musician Matt Herskowitz visited my Festival last year, I persuaded him to give a master class instead of his lunch time, after I was feeding the celebrity with sandwiches. After all, master class is the greatest thing ever! Very important! Take, for example, the famous Jacqueline du Pre, she is a brilliant English cellist who could perform four types of dynamics on one bow, she has such a great sensitivity. I had a chance to play for her teacher William Pleeth. And the opportunity to play and interact with the Cello «astronaut» — legendary Mstislav Rostropovich can be hardly overemphasized. Generally, there are very few cellist in the world, only 10-15 people for whom you can get out a hundred dollars of the wallet, to sit in a hall for two hours and listen and won’t regret about it. It turns, that there are funds, and everything seems fine, but if you don’t get the necessary stream initially, the result can be sad. So, to be guided in life and art, to understand himself young musician need meetings with the great musician. Except working on the techniques of playing the instrument master classes make you feel the magic of personality, the charisma of Master. Only in personal contact you understand, where you can take enough power to go after your mission to the end and to be a musician until the last days. «Golden-haired angel of music» – amazing violinist Oleg Kagan was very ill and he practically had no strength to go on stage, playing Mozart’s ‘’Sinfonia Concertante’’.
«I realized — said Oleg Kagan — that there is no hands are playing!» A few days later he past away. And Mstislav Rostropovich! Sometimes the great cellist simply couldn’t take regular passenger trains because of the tight concert schedule; he often had to negotiate with the train operator of a freight trains to get on time to this or that city, where he would have evening performance. Rostropovich could of come on stage few minutes before concert, you can imagine terrible stress, and play, sometimes even without a rehearsal with the orchestra. This concerts were called the best performance of the year. Generally, the most successful concerts turns out in extreme conditions. When the artist, with the high temperature, forced to perform a some composition, there is his immersion in another reality, and he understands the music depth in extraordinary way, he removes the other images for listeners.
— Borislav, tell us about your project «Cello Tango». Especially because in Moscow and St. Petersburg a new solo CD — «CELLOTANGO» will be presented soon.
— I came up and created the ‘’Cello Tango’’ myself. My friend bass player Andrey Aminov from G. Garanian : Big Band Jazz Orchestra, who played there, presented me to one of his other great music group — » Paporotnik Orchestra «. I listened to them, integrated into the team, brought my music and adapted music of the classical composers and some music of great accordionist from» Paporotnik Orchestra » Alexander Backhaus, who wrote hundreds of different compositions. Together, we found our face and played a lot of different concerts from ‘’INTERNATIONAL USADBA JAZZ OUTDOOR FESTIVAL AT ARKHANGELSKOYE ESTATE’’ to Russian Christmas Charity Ball in Marbella in Spain, from the City Day in Sochi to the concerts in front of top politicians, representing Russia. The program was also presented in Belgorod on my Festival «BelgorodMusicFest 2013″ — Borislav Strulev and friends». Music in «Cello Tango» is different. This is classical and jazzy, that was converted into our style. From Ravel’s Bolero, and polka Schnittke, and Duke Ellington’s Caravan, and of course «Fallen Leaves» to music of our accordionist Alexander Backhaus, plus tango’s about the war (WWII). But all this music has a sense of tango. This program is incredibly dancing. Sometimes, I myself can’t sit on a chair calmly. And I stand some times as if i play violin.
— Another your project «Bajan + Cello = ShowDuet007» was shown at the ‘’Platonov Festival’’ near Voronezh — Russia, as well as in Mexico, the Moscow International House of Music and the Berlin Philharmonic among other places.
— Yes, this project is dedicated to the greatest cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Once he came on tour in Siberia and because of the absence of the pianist, he played a concert with accordionist. Accordion player in the project is the composer from Germany Aydar Gaynullin. In the first part of the concert the music of Chopin, Bach, Gluck celebrates and in the second – THE TANGOS by Piazzolla, works of Aydar Gaynullin. We have amazing collection of music and grandiose plans.
— Borislav, your projects help us to understand that the cello isn’t boring, and it gathers full halls!
— That’s true. Theatrical show «Marc Chagall» was held at the ‘’Gazprom Fakel’’ Festival in Vitebsk. It was about 100 artists on stage with me: that were a circus, ballet, drama artists, acrobats and me with my band. Six thousand audience with bated breath watching the events taking place on the stage. Artist Marc Chagall left Vitebsk to study in Paris, and the revolution comes, what happened in Russia separates him with his bride Bella for five years. However, the revolutionary storm didn’t stop the lovers connection, and Bella becomes, in the end, the artist’s wife. Thanks to the director of the project Sergei Tsvetkov, with whom I made the that show «Magic», that was scheduled to be shown on Russian TV channel, and thanks to producers, who believed in my music. Also since 2005 by the invitation of my friend, pianist Denis Matsuev, I took part in the festival «Stars on Baikal», as well as in the festival «Crescendo», held in different cities of Russia. Recently I came back from Irkutsk, managed to run with the Olympic torch in Belgorod, and in the end of January I’d already performed in New York. I’m doing a series of concerts «Borislav Strulev and friends» on Broadway in New York’s legendary jazz club Charlie Parker «Birdland Jazz Club», where it is impossible to get in, where were the best of best like Oscar Peterson, Michel Petrucciani, Michel Legrand, etc. the most important jazz musicians in the world, super-stars!!!! You see, it’s very unusual because the cello is not the most popular instrument in jazz. We create on Broadway miracle that no one did before.
— We began our conversation with charities, but you didn’t tell us about your work in this area. You are the trustee of the «Nastenka» Foundation (www.nastenka.ru), who helps children with oncological diseases.
— This activity is very important for a musician. Fund exists a few years, remarkable woman Jamilya Aliyeva leads it. Me and my cello — bringing good to people! Positive energy. Millionaires — rich and not rich, people who listen to my music, open their hearts and respond — and help to ill children. Recently, there was a concert in Voronezh, and after there was an auction. And after we were able to fix few things at Children’s Hospital. So with the help of art, «Nastenka» Foundation helps children and I hope it will be able to do much more.
